This is a three-part drone composition showcasing some of the vocal noises I have most enjoyed sustaining lately. All pauses have been removed, an effect inspired by C. Spencer Yeh's album Solo Voice I-X. All of the techniques are produced right around the tongue, teeth and lips, and I sometimes sing simultaneously with them. When making abstract vocal sounds, I enjoy thinking of my voice as a tiny analog synthesizer, and here I seek to strike a balance between the thrill of precise self-subjection, and the lovely surprises that come from the inherent volatility of these techniques, dependent as they are on factors like humidity. While some of these techniques are self-invented, I selected them not for their novelty, but because they feel good in my mouth and regulate my breath speed in a satisfying way – and because they activate many simultaneous sounds, making me feel powerful and expansive. I long for a world where everyone can experience the joy and autonomy of doing unexpected things with their bodies! – astrid
